Ramblings, Sentiments, Rantings and Musings

My photo
I am a mother of 5 wonderful children and wife to one amazing Navy man. I am always changing things in my life, constantly learning something new and trying it out. I am a wannabe vegan, minimalist and currently living full time in an RV. Just for clarification, I say wannabe, because I know I am not perfect, but each day I strive to do the best I can. That's all I can expect from anyone no matter where they are in life. I learn something new everyday...mostly about myself and my little corner of reality. Life, to me, is loving, learning and making memories. These are better than all the tangible riches one can get their hands on! Besides, there will come a day when all I have left is my love and memories...so I'll stockpile as much of those as I can!
The Zoo
There are moments in time when your head and heart go into record mode. Moments that you never, ever want to forget. Yesterday we had one of those moments.
Yesterday was a perfect day for the zoo. The weather was beautiful. The sun was shining and it was around 60 degrees. Perfect I tell you, except that it was Sunday. Uggh! We are spoiled I guess you could say. Being a family that learns outside the confines of school, we can pick and choose when to go places. We generally go to the zoo during the weekdays and it is peaceful and relaxing. We wander around for hours, taking our time to truly immerse ourselves in the wonders around us instead of rushing through.
We have been to this zoo for the last four years. We have a season pass (a must with a larger family) and we use it fairly often. After numerous visits in four years, my sweet Franki has been trying to feed the giraffes. For some reason we never get there in time or the giraffes aren't hungry. Poor Franki always leaves a little bummed out.
Finally, yesterday for the first time we set out for the giraffe overlook and there they were. Eating!!! We rushed up to get in line and waited. As soon as it was her turn the giraffes looked as though they would leave and I could see the panic in her eyes. I silently prayed "Please don't leave"! The keeper handed her some leafy branches and the giraffe turned his attention to Franki! Her eyes lit up and she grinned from ear to ear! I thought she might burst with the thrill of the moment. And the giraffe ate!
There are moments in parenting that are so fulfilling and so intense! This was one of those moments. Her happiness was so amazing, so cool, so powerful! I am so grateful to be part of her experiences. I hope that she and I both remember this always!

My Miranda got to feed the giraffes as well. She thought it was pretty cool, but she didn't get the same fireworks out of it as her big sister did. But had a blast all the same.

Famous Quotes

"I am beginning to suspect all elaborate and special systems of education. They seem to me to be built upon the supposition that every child is a kind of idiot who must be taught to think. Whereas, if the child is left to himself, he will think more and better, if less showily. Let him go and come freely, let him touch real things and combine his impressions for himself, instead of sitting indoors at a little round table, while a sweet-voiced teacher suggests that he build a stone wall with his wooden blocks, or make a rainbow out of strips of coloured paper, or plant straw trees in bead flower-pots. Such teaching fills the mind with artificial associations that must be got rid of, before the child can develop independent ideas out of actual experience." -- Anne Sullivan
